Mamoudou Gassama at the Elysée on May 28,
Mamoudou Gassama, the Malian who saved a child Saturday in
Paris, will have his papers regularized today, before being
naturalized and integrate the civic service of firefighters,
Emmanuel Macron told him during an interview at the Elysée.
„All papers will be regularized,“ assured the head of state
during an exchange, broadcast on his Facebook page, with the
undocumented Malian, who saved a child from a fall of the 4th
floor of a Parisian building.
Mr. Macron also offered to initiate the process of
naturalization, which Mr. Gassama agreed to, and to integrate
the civic service of firefighters.
„It’s an exceptional act, an act of heroism, I wished we
could make an exceptional decision for you,“ said the president
to the young man visibly very moved.
However, the President of the Republic explained that this
was an exception because as a non-asylum seeker, he should not
have been regularized. „We can not give (papers) to all those
who come from Mali, Burkina, when they are in danger we give
asylum, but not for economic reasons,“ he said.
„But as far as you are concerned, you have done something
exceptional, even if you have not thought about it, it is an
act of courage and strength that is admired by all“.

„This justifies an exceptional decision,“ he added to the
press after the interview. For all that, „an exceptional act
does not make a policy“.
Asked if the French nationality is worthy, „of course,“
replied the president, „but there are rules, that’s what I also
explained in a very transparent way to this young man. We must
not be demagogic and say that everything is possible, we
protect people in danger in their country, which is not his
case, if I start to say + we accept everyone without a rule,
for the country it is not not sustainable. „
He explained that after seeing the video, he immediately
made his decision, with Gerard Collomb.
„France has always had this policy of
celebrating exceptional acts by knowing how to recognize these
merits in order to gain access to nationality and sometimes to
the greatest responsibilities“, he said, adding „I do not
compare this young man to them but Look, Jefferson, Garibaldi
… Few countries have had that. „
In jeans and short-sleeved shirt, Mamoudou Gassama spoke
Monday morning with the head of state and told him the
circumstances of his act of bravery. „Bravo,“ said Emmanuel
