The president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced on Tuesday the departure of his secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, whom he replaced with the current director of the CIA, Mike Pompeo.
A senior US official said the president wanted to reorganize his team before the talks with North Korea.
„Mike Pompeo, director of the CIA, will become our new secretary of state, he will do a fantastic job!“ Trump tweeted. „Thank you Rex Tillerson for your services!“ He added.
To head the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Trump appointed Gina Haspel, a career officer of that entity and first woman appointed to that position.
Trump praised Pompeo, a former US Army officer and congressman who headed the CIA for nearly 14 months, as „the right person for the job at this critical time.“
He had few words of praise for Tillerson, who was on tour in Africa last week when Trump decided to accept an invitation to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.
After the announcement, Tillerson suspended his schedule for being „indisposed“ and shortened his trip to return to Washington.
The management of Exxon’s former chief executive as head of US diplomacy was often marked by rumors that he was about to be expelled.
