Lawyers and „dreamers“ demonstrate in Los Angeles on March 5, 2018
The first demonstrations against the first visit of US President Donald Trump to California were registered on Monday, in the most populous state in the United States and a Democratic stronghold.
Almost 200 people protested in the center of San Diego to denounce the arrival of the president and in particular his policy against immigration in this border city with Mexico.
The Republican president must land on Tuesday at 11h30 local (19H30 GMT) to go to the town of Otay Mesa, south of San Diego and where the eight prototypes of the wall that wants to build about 3,000 kilometers of the border with Mexico are exposed , one of his main campaign promises.
Ariel Norcross, present at the demonstration on Monday, had a banner that read: „I do not want politics (Trump) in my state, in my country.“
„These eight prototypes are useless (…) People can circumvent the walls, it is a waste of taxpayers‘ money,“ he added.
For Tuesday, several demonstrations are expected to protest the president’s visit to the state.
„I do not know why it took him so long to come, but he is realizing that the place he finds the most opposition is here on the border, here in California,“ said Ali Torabei, another protester.
The visit comes at a time of high tension between his government and the state, especially in immigration matters. As Attorney General Jeff Sessions accused California of deliberately obstructing the application of federal laws by offering protection to undocumented immigrants.
