The Swedish John Ausonius, also known as „the laser killer“, in Frankfurt on December 13, 2017, where he will receive the verdict for the death of a Jewish woman 25 years ago in this German city
„The laser murderer“, a Swede who is serving a life sentence in his country for a series of racist attacks, will receive on Wednesday the verdict of a German court on the murder of a Jewish woman 25 years ago in Frankfurt.
The defendant, John Ausonius, is now 64 years old and is currently serving a life sentence in Sweden for shooting at a dozen people in 1991 and 1992, using a laser.
The attacks, centered on people of foreign origin, left one dead and several seriously injured. According to the author of the Utøya massacre, the Norwegian Anders Breivik, Ausonius was one of his sources of inspiration.
Ausonius was serving time in Sweden after being sentenced to life in 1995 but at the end of 2016 he was extradited to Germany to be tried for the February 1992 murder of Blanka Zmigrod, a 68-year-old Jewish woman who worked in a cloakroom and who had survived the concentration camps.
The woman was killed by a gunshot to the head but investigators have not been able to clarify whether there was really an anti-Semitic motivation in the murder.
On Tuesday, the prosecution requested a life sentence for „aggravated murder“, with a minimum of 15 years of irreducible punishment.
The reason for the murder seems futile: Ausonius was convinced that the victim had stolen his electronic diary that contained the numbers of his bank accounts and wanted revenge.
They had met in the wardrobe of a hotel in Frankfurt where she worked.
At the time of recovering her coat, he accused her of having stolen her electronic diary from one of her pockets, something the sexageria denied.
Then, the management of the establishment asked Ausonius to leave the place, according to the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ).
– Dyed blond –
„We’re going to see each other again!“ Said John Ausonius, who denies the charges. According to the investigators, after the murder he took his bag, since he was convinced that he had the agenda disappeared.
Ausonius, whose real name is Wolfgang Alexander, was born in Sweden to a Swiss father and a German mother. He was obsessed with looking like a „real“ Swede, to the point that he even dyed his blond hair and put on blue contact lenses, FAZ said.
According to the newspaper’s background, he had a personality disorder, an extremely violent behavior, especially with women, and carried out several assaults against banks.
He interrupted his studies very soon and fulfilled military service, where his accuracy as a shooter drew attention. Then he continued doing small informal jobs, before making a fortune speculating on the stock market, money that he lost, finally being left on the street with nothing.
According to the German investigators, he committed the murder of Frankfurt after having left Sweden fleeing after the racist attacks. Then, in June 1992 he returned to Stockholm to try, again, to rob a bank.
The Norwegian Anders Breivik, responsible for the Utøya massacre that left 77 dead in July 2011, said during the trial against him that John Ausonius was one of his models, as well as the German neo-Nazi trio National Socialist Clandestine, responsible for a series of racist crimes in the 2000s.
Breivik was sentenced in 2012 to 21 years in prison, the maximum penalty in Norway.
