The players of Spain celebrate the victory against France in the semifinals of the European Handball Championship, this Friday, January 26 in Zagreb
Spain will repeat its presence in the final of the European handball after eliminating the reigning world champion, France, by 27-23 in the first semifinal, this Friday in Zagreb.
The Hispanics took the rematch of three recent events in which they had fallen to the French, in the 2014 European Championship, the 2015 World Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Spain will aim on Sunday, against the winner of the second semifinal Denmark-Sweden, to its first European title in this sport, after having been defeated in the four previous finals that disputed in the continental appointment (1996, 1998, 2006 and 2016) .
France, which claimed the world title for the sixth time a year ago in Paris, will have to wait to get its fourth European crown. The Bleus had become accustomed to winning one European out of two, but after the successes of Switzerland-2006, Austria-2010 and Denmark-2014, they will not be able to continue with that pace.
Until now, the French had had an impeccable career in this tournament, with six victories in six matches, including victories against serious candidates to the podium as Norway (32-31), Sweden (23-17) and Croatia (30-27).
By contrast, Spain had shown more signs of weakness in this European, losing two of the matches played, against Denmark and Slovenia, but had managed to move to the semifinals with a great victory over Germany, the champion of the previous European, which now confirm against the French.
