The state does not propose Corsican nationalists „a discussion“ but „a capitulation,“ denounced Tuesday with AFP leader autonomist Gilles Simeoni, after being received earlier this week by Edouard Philippe and Gerard Larcher.
„We can not go into a discussion in which we are asked to give up everything in advance, it is no longer a discussion, it is a capitulation,“ said Simeoni in an interview with AFP.
„A capitulation in very civil and very republican forms, in the salons and the golds of the Republic, but a capitulation.“ It is unthinkable, „he insisted, after meeting the Prime Minister on Monday, the president of the Senate Tuesday and before an interview with the Speaker of the National Assembly François de Rugy Wednesday night.

Mr. Simeoni regrets that the state closed the door to the main demands of his side (co-officiality of the Corsican language, creation of a resident status …), in the perspective of the next constitutional reform.
„Why do we want to reduce everything that is happening to a purely technical and administrative dimension?“ It’s a good thing that there is a lack of political will, this is the real problem, „regretted the president of the single community of Corsica, elected in December 2017 and strong according to him a „mandate that is clear on all the fundamentals“.
„What we are asking for is not to be better treated than the French of the continent,“ said Simeoni.
„It is simply that when there is a difference in objective situation, for example linked to insularity, that there are policies which make it possible to correct these differences without undermining the principle of equality“, he stressed.
Mr. Simeoni also raised the issue of recognition of the „Corsican people“, „more political and more difficult to deal with“. „When we receive friends from the continent (…) for them it is obvious that there is a Corsican people, because there is a language, a culture, differences“, he pointed.
„Are we able to invent political and legal tools that make it possible to treat and take into account these realities while remaining within the framework of the Republic?“ It is not scandalous to want to pose these problems and to reflect to the question of how to solve them, „said the autonomist leader.
