France Handball coach Didier Dinart during the Euro-2018 match against Norway in Porec, Croatia on January 12, 2018
After their intense victory against Norway on Friday, French handball players continue the Euro Sunday with an easier match apparently against Austria (6:15 pm), but will take care to approach the meeting with humility and seriousness: „It should not be that we waste all the work that has been done, „says Didier Dinart.
Since the start of preparation for the European Championship, the French coach had made the match of 12 January against Norway a deadline. „The players were tired of hearing that date,“ he smiles.
Now in Austria, narrowly defeated in the opening match by Belarus (26-27) and much more limited than the vice-world champions Norway.
His selection has not qualified for the last three major international competitions: the World Cup-2017, Rio Olympics and Euro-2016. But it is progressing under the orders of its coach Patrekur Johannesson, with a focus on the 2020 European Championship to be played at home.
Like France, the Austrians present themselves at this Croatian Euro with a rejuvenated group, led by the back of Kiel Nikola Bilyk. It also has promising young talents, like its pivots Tobias Wagner or Wilhelm Jelinek.
„If we had an excess of confidence or lack of humility, it could play tricks,“ warns Didier Dinart. „It’s still a sport where there are things to be taken seriously, the France team has a status to respect.“
No risk of decompression, according to the coach Guadeloupe: „They are professional players. It is not necessary to lower a tone the commitment made Friday.“
„In the culture of the France team, we learned to always give everything,“ added captain Cédric Sorhaindo.
After leaving a lot of energy in the confrontation with Norway, the number of Blues should be overhauled in part against Austria to save some players to conquer a fourth European title.
„You have to preserve them and not do anything, knowing that there is still the goal of garnering more points,“ says Dinart.
