The Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohamad Javad Zarif, before the meeting with European Foreign Ministers, in Brussels on January 11, 2018
The foreign ministers of France, Germany and the United Kingdom expressed their support for the nuclear agreement reached with Tehran in 2015, and criticized by US President Donald Trump, before a meeting on Thursday with his Iranian counterpart, Mohamad Javad Zarif.
This agreement „made it possible to contain an acute crisis in the Middle East and is currently one of the pillars of the architecture of global non-proliferation,“ said on Thursday morning the head of German diplomacy, Sigmar Gabriel.
„The United Kingdom has always been clear: Iran’s nuclear agreement is a crucial agreement that makes the world safer,“ said his British counterpart Boris Johnson, who considered it „vital“ to continue working with European partners „in Iran and in the world“.
The French Foreign Ministry said for its part to be „determined“ to preserve the agreement reached in Vienna, said on the eve of the meeting convened by the head of European diplomacy, Federica Mogherini, in Brussels.
Description and chronology of the main points of the Vienna agreement signed on July 14, 2015 on the Iranian nuclear program
The July 2015 agreement reached between Tehran and the 5 + 1 group – the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, France and Germany – allowed to lift part of the international sanctions imposed on Iran in exchange for guarantees on the exclusively civil character of its nuclear program.
The meeting comes at a time of uncertainty about the position of Trump, who in the coming days must decide whether to impose again a series of economic sanctions suspended after Iran fulfilled one of the commitments of this historic pact.
Two sources in Washington indicated that the US president had not yet made his decision on Wednesday night, especially when the decision could be announced on Friday.
Iran already said to be prepared „for all scenarios“. In Moscow, where he went to gather Russia’s support on Wednesday, Zarif denounced „the destructive policy of the United States.“
The Europeans will also take advantage of the meeting to express to the Iranian foreign minister his concern about the response of the Iranian authorities to the recent demonstrations, which cost the lives of a score of people.
Iranian President Hasan Rohani „declared that the dissatisfaction of the Iranian people should be taken seriously,“ recalled the German Foreign Minister, who encouraged the Iranian government in this regard to „lead this dialogue.“
