Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza at a press conference on December 21, 2017.
The Venezuelan government said that the Armed Forces „will never bow down“ to the United States, following sanctions imposed this Friday by Washington against four Venezuelan officials, all active or retired military.
„The FANB (Bolivarian National Armed Forces) will never bow to any foreign power, much less to the imperialist and warlike forces of Donald Trump’s supremacist government,“ said Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza on Twitter.
Arreaza directly mentioned Heather Nauert, spokeswoman for the US State Department.
Hours before, the US Treasury Department sanctioned four senior Venezuelan officials, Rodolfo Marco Torres, Gerardo Izquierdo Torres, Francisco Rangel Gomez and Fabio Zavarse Pabón, for „corruption“ or „repression“ against opposition protests that left about 125 dead. between last April and July.
According to the official note announcing the measures, the four „forgot the republican professional mission“ of the Venezuelan military institutions.
Trump „and his picturesque government must understand that Venezuela will never give in to blackmail or threats,“ said Delcy Rodriguez, president of the Constituent Assembly, composed only of Chavistas and who has ruled the country since August as absolute power.
Qualified by the opposition as a maneuver by President Nicolás Maduro to establish „a dictatorship“, the Constituent Assembly is unknown to the United States.
Those sanctioned this Friday join a long list of top Venezuelan officials against whom Washington has approved measures, including Maduro himself.
The Trump government also barred US citizens and businesses from negotiating debt issued by the Venezuelan government and its state oil company PDVSA, including default statements for late payments of interest and equity capital.
