The United States is ready to sit at the negotiating table with North Korea „without preconditions,“ US Foreign Secretary Rex Tillerson said Tuesday.
„It’s not realistic to say, we’re going to talk to you only if you come to the negotiating table ready to give up your nuclear program,“ he said at a conference in Washington.
So far, the United States has affirmed that any negotiation could only deal with the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. „They have invested too much in it,“ he said of the Pyongyang regime’s development of intercontinental missiles and nuclear weapons.
„We have said on the diplomatic side that we are ready to discuss as soon as North Korea wants to discuss,“ he said. „We are ready to hold a first meeting without any preconditions.“
Rex Tillerson, however, recalled, as in the past, that discussions could only take place after „a period of calm“. „It would be difficult to speak if in the middle of our discussions you decide to test another machine,“ he said, recalling the many North Korean ballistic and nuclear tests of recent months.
„Let’s meet, talk about the weather if you want, or talk about whether you need a square or round table if that’s what you like, but at least let’s face each other and then we can start to establish a road map of what we would like to go to, „said the Secretary of State.
