Jean-Claude Juncker and Theresa May arrive at a press conference on Friday, December 8 in Brussels
The United Kingdom will pay between 40,000 and 45,000 million euros (between 35,000 and 39,000 million pounds) to leave the European Union, confirmed this Friday to the AFP a spokesman the British Government.
„I confirm these figures,“ the spokesman said, the day it was announced that London and Brussels reached an agreement on the terms of the divorce, which includes the amount of the bill, in addition to the future of the border on the island of Ireland and that of Europeans in the United Kingdom.
The amount to be paid has been the most controversial issue in the United Kingdom of all those related to Brexit.
Paying to leave was tantamount to a humiliation for the anti-EU, bearing in mind that one of their main arguments was that the United Kingdom has already historically paid too much to belong to the bloc.
Thus, a few months ago, the British Foreign Minister, Boris Johnson – the main face of the campaign in favor of Brexit – sent the EU „to take a fresh breath“ for the divorce bill submitted to London.
The British Government has now agreed to pay that figure in terms of budgetary commitments already acquired or pensions of European officials, among others, in order to move on to negotiate and a trade agreement with the EU, its main market.
