Activists of the campaign for equal marriage celebrate the approval of the law before the seat of the Parliament of Australia, this Thursday December 7 in Canberra
The Parliament of Australia approved on Thursday the law on gay marriage, a key step towards the legalization of unions between people of the same sex.
It is now up to Governor-General Peter Cosgrove, the representative in Australia of Queen Elizabeth of England, to sign this law, which should happen in the coming days.
Only four of the 150 members of the House of Representatives opposed the text, approved last week by the Senate by 43 votes in favor and 12 against. The vote this Thursday was celebrated with applause and hugs in the lower house.
„What a day of love, for equality and for respect! Australia did it,“ said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull of the center-right. „Every Australian had his voice and felt it was fair,“ he added.
The Australians had approved marriage between people of the same sex in a non-binding consultation organized in recent months.
